THIS MONTH’S SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON …
LINDA CARADINE
Linda Caradine is an award-winning Oregon writer. Her work has been included in The RavensPerch, Free State Review, Cobalt Review, Lindenwood Review and many other literary journals, as well as numerous magazines, newspapers and online. When she is not writing, Linda manages a nonprofit animal rescue organization. She has written a memoir about that experience. Her book, Lying Down with Dogs, is due out in April 2024. She has just finished writing a new novel of psychological suspense and is hard at work on a sequel.
NIWA: First, please tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know.
Linda: I am neurodivergent.
NIWA:What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever written?
Linda: I once wrote a story about a hypothetical encounter with Bigfoot in the Oregon woods. It wound up winning first place in a fiction contest at a writers' conference I attended back in 1986 and spurred my return to full-time writing.
NIWA:What genre would you never write?
Linda: Romance - because I've never been very lucky in love and don't feel I have the breadth of experience to lend this genre.
NIWA: If you could invent a country, what would you name it?
Linda: I'd name it Kreest after the imaginary world I made up as a kid. It was the best, most exciting, and safest place to live. I would love to go back there.
NIWA: What actor would play the part of your book’s hero?
Linda: Definitely Rami Malek. I'm writing a psychological thriller about a shape-shifting serial killer on the loose in Portland, Oregon. I'm a visual thinker and I've written the book with Malek in mind all along.
Grace and Aidan are newlyweds, but among their wedding gifts is a copy of the manuscript ME Doug Hacker is writing about her cases. When Grace goes back to work, she realizes she must be wrong. Her cases are secondary and Doug is the target. When that flops, she and the ME plan to meet at Surgery 10 to look at his autopsies.
That's when the dark creature appears. Thinking it came in on Winken, Blinken, and Nod's UFO changes everything. The problem is, wherever Grace goes, the creature is there, except for when she and the others meet in the church, It definitely doesn't like anything to do with religion. From that moment on, everyone starts carrying crosses.
Grace starts thinking about ways to deter the creature and settles on exorcism, but how do you exorcise a dark creature?

It was decided that the conversation is far from over. Expect more thoughtful exchanges on this topic in future meetings.
