THE RETURNThe Return (El Retorno), a novel set in the 1950s and 60s in the province of Loja, Ecuador, is the story of the life of José Alfredo Sánchez and his family, who are forced to leave La Esperanza (their farm) and migrate to the capital because of the threat of drought. This work explores the hostile reality faced by the peasantry who decided to leave their land. Abuse and discrimination appear throughout the narrative and recall the global stigma that has always existed toward migrants. The Return is the denunciation, is the voice of alert and is the hope of a people who yearn to live on their own land and tend their fields, with their family and with their freedom.
