The war continues as Admiral Mitla assembles the remaining forces of the Vectan Republic for its first major counterattack of the war. He is forced to battle not just the enemy without but those survivors afraid to risk what’s left of their forces.

Meanwhile, Ratoun struggles with his place in the war, and the personal costs that have come with it. He finds support in his new relationships but finds new challenges as he is sent on an important scouting mission to Tesul Ran, the world that Mitla hopes to free with his next attack.

Ratoun soon discovers critical information for the battle to come, can he make it back to the fleet in time?
